Competency Restoration

In February 2025, Wings Across Alabama was given the opportunity to engage with the Alabama Department of Mental Health on the Competency Restoration Project.  The Alabama Department of Mental Health established and maintains a competency restoration curriculum and program available to defendants who are navigating the criminal justice system. Wings has partnered with ADMH to provide mental health peer support services to the defendants who are engaged with the competency restoration program.

Peer Support is a relationship-based approach where individuals with lived experience of mental illness provide emotional and practical support to others facing similar challenges. Likewise, our Competency Restoration Peer Specialists (CRPS) also have lived experience with the criminal justice system.

Our CRPSs provide support as defendants work through the CR Curriculum and begin to look toward re-integration in their respective communities.  Additionally, Wings is committed to providing quality peer support services through our existing Support Groups and Warm Line once defendants complete the CR program.

Please check out our resource page, Resources Across Alabama, for additional support.

If you are engaged in the Competency Restoration Program through the Alabama Department of Mental Health and would like to learn more about mental health peer support, please complete the interest form and one of our CRPS will contact you with more information about the services that are available to  you.
